Rock Climbing in the Peak District

Including complete novices will rapidly be climbing protected Peak District outcrops on this short course. Attendees will become proficient in securing the rope, belaying and multiple climbing techniques, plus abseiling down. With a maximum of six participants to each tutor, there is significant one-on-one guidance and custom goals. The training is appropriate for all individuals aged 13 and over, from first-time climbers to those with limited gym climbing background. The base is a brief walk from Bamford railway station, located on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

Non-Representational Art in Spain

This historic hillside village, a historic white village in Andalucía, around 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the inspiring backdrop for this painting holiday. Participants of every skill level – including novices – will discover how to conceive and execute abstract artworks. Some time will be spent outside, working on tutorials in the open. These charcoal drawings and paintings will then be expanded upon in the workspace, with attendees producing multiple interpretive scenes in acrylics to be displayed in the village. The group has sole use of the venue, which is built around an central patio and has a roof terrace with views over the hills. The cost encompasses five days’ art instruction; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and additional local sights.

Vegetarian Cooking in the Algarve

This sun-drenched foodie getaway, based at a villa by the river in the central Algarve, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Guests will learn to produce meze spreads, attend a falafel-making workshop, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains such as spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are trips to the village market and a nearby winery to sample Portuguese wines, along with free time for strolls by the nearby river, to unwind on the deck or take a dip in the infinity pool. The farmhouse, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, as well as safari tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an energizing, welcoming three-day adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a party-style group warmup, then several hour-and-a-half classes teaching various urban dance forms, then an 60-minute jam to show off those solos. Dancers are divided into groups based on skill level, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to street dance, right up to advanced dancers or teachers. The camp does not provide lodging but there are several hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into London.

Maritime Singing Break in St Ives

St Ives is the perfect location for a sea shanty weekend. Guests will learn traditional shanties from a experienced musician, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes voice exercises, breath control techniques, performance tips and a final evening concert. The holiday is held in a country house with views of the bay. All meals are provided, such as a Cornish cream tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals. Grog, unfortunately, is not included. Writing in Greece

Author and lecturer Greg Mosse leads the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He covers topics including story structure, characters, setting and suspense, to sending manuscripts to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the start and finish of the retreat. The holiday is held at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages are set around a central garden with a pool (companions are welcome to share). On the final evening, aspiring writers mark the occasion with a musical performance in the courtyard and a final meal.

Beginners' Beekeeping in Mid Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a wide range of courses on sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This two-day introduction will help attendees get to grips with the basics of beekeeping, explore the life cycle of honeybees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is aimed at produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. The weekend is also a chance to relax in the centre's sustainably managed forests, which are home to wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Accommodation the evening prior is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging during the course is 97 pounds.

Yachting for Novices in Essex

These recently launched weekend sailing courses are spent on Wayfarers and keelboats on the Blackwater estuary. They are aimed at novice sailors learning the ropes or more experienced mariners who want a skills update. Sailors can hone their helming, build their nautical skills and aim for the recognized levels one to three in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and overnight packages, staying in basic shared rooms in the waterfront training centre. The day option provides packed lunches, while the residential package includes two nights’ accommodation and all meals, from full English breakfasts to evening barbecues.
