Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded gifts can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by world leaders during her travels. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

The items reportedly stored in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

The detailed catalog is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her allies, with winning over international counterparts and making Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a unconventional way to manage the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
