Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
