The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
