The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
