UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
